Metrans, the rail company of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has expanded its hub terminal in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia, by approximately five hectares. This expansion aims to meet the increasing demand for storage and transportation solutions in the region, reaffirming status of Dunajská Streda Metrans terminal as their critical intermodal hub in Central Europe.
With this expansion, Metrans' terminal area now covers 326,000 square meters. The newly added 50,000 square meters will primarily serve for container repair and storage, and a new container washing facility has been established on the site.
The Metrans terminal in Dunajská Streda has played a significant role in intermodal transport between Central and South-Eastern Europe since 1999. The company continues to expand its network of intermodal connections and inland terminals across Europe, focusing on providing environmentally friendly transport solutions by rail.
Its disadvantage is the railway connection, as it is situated on a single-track, non-electrified railway line with heavy passenger commuter traffic. Metrans has been lobbying for double-tracking and electrifying of the track for many years.
