The new units will be of the same Avelia Stream Nordic X80 type as the 45 trains currently being delivered.

Västtrafik has received formal approval from the Västra Götaland Regional Council to procure 35 new electric multiple units for its regional fleet. The order, valued at SEK 4 billion (approx. EUR 340 million), will be placed with Alstom and builds on an existing framework agreement.

The expansion is tied to anticipated demand increases in the region, where daily passenger volumes are projected to rise from the current 65,000 to 100,000 by the 2030s.

The procurement is part of Västtrafik’s preparation for infrastructure upgrades in the region, including the opening of Västlänken stations and the completion of several major track projects. Older rolling stock is being phased out in parallel, necessitating the addition of new vehicles.

The X80 units are built for Nordic conditions and capable of 200 km/h operation. Each 80-metre trainset will offer 270 seats and accommodate wheelchairs, prams, bicycles and other mobility aids. Västtrafik is exercising options included in its previous agreement with Alstom to maintain consistency across its fleet, aiming to reduce complexity in operation and maintenance.
