The Spanish government has authorized a tender for the modernization and maintenance of 43 locomotives in logistics centers across the country.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif, has estimated an investment of EUR 55 million for this project. The contract aims to ensure the reliability and availability of these locomotives, which play a critical role in shunting and last-mile services at freight terminals and support maintenance work on the railway network.

The tender includes the renewal of systems and components to extend the useful life of the locomotives and a five-year maintenance plan to maintain efficient and safe operations. The locomotives involved in this project are from the Class 311 and are stationed in various logistics facilities in different regions:

  • Northwest: A Coruña San Diego and Vigo Guixar
  • Northeast: Cerbère, Port Bou, Barcelona Can Tunis, Barcelona Morrot, Granollers, Castellbisbal, Martorell, Tarragona Constanti, and Tarragona Mercancías
  • North: Hendaye, Irún, Bilbao Mercancías, Pamplona, Noáin, and Miranda de Ebro Mercancías
  • Center: Abroñigal, Vicálvaro Mercancías, and Villaverde Mercancías

Adif currently operates a fleet of 97 locomotives in logistics centers, all manufactured between 1989 and 1991:

  • 43 x Class 311
  • 54 x Class 310

In addition to these, the company also has 29 locomotives dedicated to maintaining the railway infrastructure across the network, with 21 more locomotives in the manufacturing phase—six for standard gauge, 12 for Iberian gauge, and three for the narrow-gauge network.
