Contship has introduced a fully electric port tractor into quay operations at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), as part of a pilot project aimed at reducing direct emissions from terminal activities.

The vehicle will be operated by Hannibal for internal shuttle movements within the terminal. The pilot is intended to support a gradual shift towards electrified quay tractor operations, particularly in areas where vehicles work close to charging infrastructure and follow frequent stop-start cycles.

Electric tractors are well suited to container terminal use because regenerative braking can help recover energy during repeated manoeuvres, while zero-emission operation reduces local emissions during container handling.

The project was co-financed through Italy’s Green Ports PNRR programme, managed by the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea and supported by EU Next Generation EU funds. The programme focuses on renewable energy, energy efficiency and air-quality improvements in port areas.
