European funding has been approved for the construction of a new intermodal terminal in Ruse, according to information released by Bulgaria’s Ministry of Transport and Communications. The total value of the project is close to EUR 60 million.

The scope of the project includes the construction of a new railway station with seven tracks, the reinstatement of the rail connection to the Danube Bridge, and the development of a new road access route linking the terminal with the Northern Industrial Zone of Ruse.

The planned facility will comprise administrative buildings, a cargo handling area, a customs checkpoint, warehouse space, parking areas and landscaped green zones. According to the project outline, the terminal is intended to support intermodal freight operations combining rail and road transport.

The National Railway Infrastructure Company is expected to launch a public procurement procedure for the design and construction of the terminal in January 2026. Once construction is completed, the operation and management of the facility are planned to be assigned to a private operator.

The project is linked with wider transport infrastructure plans in the region, including future developments around Danube crossings near Ruse and ongoing works on the Ruse–Varna railway line, which is undergoing modernisation and capacity expansion.

Ruse is situated in the north of Bulgaria, at the border with Romania, around ýť km south of Bucharest.
