The site has been under construction for two years, followed by a six-month testing phase.

The Rail Gate Bremerhaven transhipment facility at the EUROGATE Container Terminal Bremerhaven is starting official operations on 1 July 2025.

The facility occupies an area of approximately 80,000 square metres. The construction involved the installation of around 60,000 square metres of new asphalt, 42,000 tonnes of track ballast, 20 kilometres of new cable routes, and 19 kilometres of fibre optic cabling. Around 200 tonnes of steel structures were dismantled during the preparation works.

Rail Gate Bremerhaven is equipped with six transhipment tracks, each measuring 762 metres in length. The site is designed for a handling capacity of up to 330,000 containers per year.

One of the key elements of the new facility is the use of four remote-controlled gantry cranes. These cranes are operated from control stations located in Gatehouse 4 instead of the traditional on-crane cabins. The cranes are equipped with modern camera systems and sensor technology, which support the operators and partially automate container data processing. This change introduces the role of remote crane operators (RCO), a position that has been trialled during the testing phase.

The investment in Rail Gate Bremerhaven amounted to EUR 70 million. The project was delivered by EUROGATE Container Terminal Bremerhaven in cooperation with ROLAND Umschlagsgesellschaft, both holding a 50 percent share in Rail Gate Bremerhaven, which will operate the facility.

The new rail terminal is part of the transhipment infrastructure directly connected to the container terminals at the port of Bremerhaven. The facility is intended to handle combined transport flows between maritime and inland freight routes.
