Ukrainian Railways have received the first shipment of Austrian-made rails under its current procurement contract with Voestalpine Rail Technology.
The supply contract was signed in April as part of the EU-funded reconstruction programme “UZ Emergency Support,” implemented in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). A total of seven bidders, including various manufacturing and trading companies, participated in the procurement procedure. Voestalpine offered a price of EUR 900 per tonne, which led to the selection of the Austrian supplier.
As a result of the pricing offered during the bidding, Ukrainian Railways was able to expand the original procurement scope by 20%. The final contract includes a total supply of 36,000 tonnes of rails, which corresponds to around 280 kilometres of track renewal or construction.
Earlier this year, in January, Ukrainian Railways received 1,083 tonnes of rails from the French manufacturer Saarstahl Rail. That batch is part of a separate intergovernmental supply agreement for a total of 19,000 tonnes.
