The new concrete carriageway promises smoother journeys, reduced maintenance, and enhanced freight capacity.

Work on the Lötschberg tunnel carriageway has been completed. This marks the end of the renovation of the carriageway between Kandersteg and Goppenstein. The work cost 191 million euros and took six years to complete.

With the completion of the work, the restrictions on train traffic will no longer apply. From the 5th of October, trains will once again be running at half-hourly intervals. At peak times, up to six trains per direction will be able to pass through. Furthermore, from December, BLS trains will stop at all stations on the Lötschberg-Südrampe.

The new concrete carriageway has several advantages: the tunnel is smoother, the new carriageway lasts longer, and requires less maintenance than a conventional ballasted carriageway. Furthermore, freight trains with four-meter high semi-trailers can now travel on both tracks (4-meter corridor).
