Four companies joined the iWagon presentation for Minister of State for Rail and HS2.

The collaboration between VTG Rail UK, Mendip Rail, and Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) took center stage during Rail Minister Huw Merriman's visit to Merehead Rail Sidings and Torr Quarry in Somerset. The highlight of the tour on May 16 was the presentation of the iWagon, a new rail freight technology developed by VTG Rail UK and Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK).

The iWagon is designed to improve rail freight performance with advanced sensors, data analytics, and automation. These features aim to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and wagon availability. During the visit, the rail minister was given a comprehensive overview of the technology and its potential impact on the rail freight sector.

The visit also included insights into the long-standing partnership between VTG and Mendip Rail, which has successfully reduced road congestion by shifting a significant number of lorry movements to rail. This collaboration reportedly removes around 400,000 lorry movements annually, providing substantial environmental benefits through reduced CO2 emissions compared to road transport.

Mendip Rail, a joint venture between Aggregate Industries and Heidelberg Materials, is instrumental in transporting over nine million tonnes of aggregate annually from the Mendip Hills to various construction sites in London and the South-East. This highlights the vital role of rail freight in supporting infrastructure projects.
