Siemens Mobility has secured a major contract to deploy ETCS Level 2 and its new Signaling X platform on 87 km of rail lines in Chile. It is the country’s first-ever ETCS Level 2 project and the first Signaling X deployment in Latin America.

EFE Trenes de Chile has awarded Siemens Mobility its first ETCS Level 2 project in the country, covering 87 km on the Alameda–Melipilla (61 km) and Santiago–Batuco (26 km) lines. The project marks the first implementation of ETCS L2 in Chile and the first use of Siemens’ Signaling X platform in Latin America.

The contract includes engineering, supply, installation and commissioning over five years, followed by ten years of comprehensive maintenance. Signaling X — running on virtualized, cloud-ready DS3 architecture — integrates interlockings, signalling and control systems in a centralized data environment. The technology is designed for SIL4 applications and operates on standard commercial hardware.

The installation includes advanced interlockings, wayside equipment, traffic control centers and onboard systems for 32 trains. Communication will use 4G-LTE with readiness for future 5G upgrades. Siemens Mobility notes that ETCS L2 will streamline operations, reduce the number of physical interlockings and simplify maintenance.

The Chile project follows Siemens Mobility’s recent award for the region’s largest ETCS Level 2 contract in São Paulo, reinforcing the company’s growing role in digital signalling across Latin America.

A ten-year service agreement will cover preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance, supported by a regional software maintenance Center of Competence, which Siemens plans to establish through this contract. ETCS Level 2 is set to become the standard for future EFE network expansions.

Siemens Mobility has an established presence across Latin America, having delivered high-automation metros and major electrification and digitalization projects in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina and Chile.
