The aim of this initiative is to retrofit 163 locomotives and self-propelled wagons in order to bring Lithuania's railway infrastructure up to EU standards and to ensure a reliable supply of spare parts.

The LTG Group will be responsible for the replacement of the Russian KLUB-U safety system for locomotives and self-propelled wagons. SRPA Impulse, the winner of the tender, has already started the design work for the system, which the dismantling of the existing system will follow.

Overall, the LTG Group is investing EUR 10.1 million into a secure new control scheme for locomotives. Under the contract with SRPA Impulse, it is planned that the Russian KLUB-U system, which used to be installed in rolling stock operated in Lithuania, will be phased out.

During this period, 35 LTG Link, 111 LTG Cargo, and 17 LTG Infra locomotives and self-propelled wagons, i.e. a total of 163 units, will have their locomotive safety systems replaced. The Estonian VEPS locomotive safety system has already been installed and tested in four other vehicles of "Geležinkelio tiesimo centras" (GTC), a company of the LTG Group.

Installing the new system is part of the FREE Rail Programme initiated and implemented by the LTG Group. FREE Rail aims to integrate the railway sector into the European railway system and to increase its resilience. FREE Rail will also enable the development and implementation of a rail operating model tailored to the Baltic region. The model will be based on EU standards and best practices and will be adapted to the specifics of broad gauge.

“We are accelerating our plans and aiming to move away from the Russian KLUB-U locomotive safety system as soon as possible to ensure the use of a safe system and the supply of spare parts in all locomotives and self-propelled sets of railroad cars of LTG Group,” said Gediminas Šečkus, Chief Resilience Officer at LTG Group.
