The new train design is part of the company's long-term initiative to modernize its transport services. The E10 series is scheduled to be introduced in the autumn of 2027 for test runs, with commercial operations planned for the 2030 fiscal year.
Key features of the E10 series
The E10 series will maintain a maximum operating speed of 320 km/h and will consist of 10-car formations. The train's design will incorporate technology validated through the ALFA-X experimental platform, including measures aimed at improving safety in earthquake-prone regions. These include derailment prevention guides and lateral dampers to absorb shocks and minimize the risk of damage.
The interior of the E10 series will introduce an updated layout based on the existing "TRAIN DESK" concept, focusing on optimizing passenger comfort. The seating configuration will shift to a 2+2 arrangement, providing more space between seats. Additional amenities such as expanded luggage storage areas, universal power outlets at all seats, and designated wheelchair spaces with window access are also planned.
Freight handling and infrastructure integration
The E10 series will feature a dedicated luggage loading door in car 5, which is intended to facilitate smoother handling of cargo at intermediate stations. This adaptation is designed to support the flexibility of JR East’s "Hakobiyun" parcel delivery service, which integrates rail-based freight transport into passenger operations.
Energy efficiency and future adaptation
In line with broader efficiency targets, the train will introduce a blowerless induction motor system, eliminating the need for cooling fans, alongside SiC-based (silicon carbide) inverter technology for the traction system. These updates are expected to improve energy efficiency in operations. Additionally, the train will be equipped with technology that allows for condition-based maintenance to optimize servicing schedules.
Preparations are also being made to accommodate potential future automation of Tohoku Shinkansen operations. However, specific implementation details regarding automatic train operation have not been disclosed.
Exterior design and aesthetic approach
The exterior of the E10 series will adopt a green color scheme, with lighter shades referred to as "Tsugaru Green" and darker sections labeled "Evening Elm." The train's design will incorporate curved motifs inspired by cherry blossoms, forming a continuous pattern along the carriages. JR East has collaborated with the UK-based design firm Tangerine for this project, marking the first time an overseas company has been involved in designing one of its trains.
Further details on the E10 series' specifications and operational rollout are expected to be announced as development progresses.
