MAPNA Group unveiled its latest innovation, the MAP30 freight locomotive, and the MP610 diesel engine. The event took place in May 2024, at the company’s facilities in Alborz Province.
MAP30 is powered by a 4,000-horsepower engine and its components, such as a traction motor, compressor, blower, axles, electric motors, and radiators, were all produced by MAPNA’s subsidiary companies. This locomotive includes the first domestically designed and constructed diesel engine, generator, and AC control system.
Minister of Industry, Mine, and Trade Abbas Aliabadi, who attended the ceremony, highlighted the importance of industrializing Iran and creating a domestic market for its industries. He pointed out the engine's versatility, with applications extending to electrical, marine, and railway sectors. Aliabadi also underscored the need for significant investment in the railway industry and announced plans for MAPNA to develop electric and hybrid locomotives.
MAPNA Group President Mohammad Owliya spoke about the challenges in raw material supply due to global disruptions and emphasized the importance of securing payments for delivered products and services. He noted ongoing discussions with relevant institutions to expedite product deliveries and highlighted the company's future direction towards rail transport electrification.
Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI), Miad Salehi, praised the collaboration between MAPNA Group and RAI, which has led to the production of numerous wagons and locomotives. He mentioned the addition of 69 new locomotives to the national fleet under a contract with MAPNA, with another 50 locomotives currently under production. Salehi also addressed the financial needs of the railway sector, noting that the Iranian Parliament has allocated EUR 765 million for locomotive purchases and railway development, though the total estimated need exceeds EUR 2.1 billion.
