Port Tarragona is preparing the PortTarragona Terminal Guadalajara–Marchamalo, a EUR 30m inland intermodal facility linking central Spain with the Mediterranean corridor and the wider European rail network.
It is designed to handle up to 100,000 intermodal transport units (UTIs) per year and includes six tracks, three of them 750 metres long, along with three reception and dispatch tracks. The site has rail access from both Madrid and Zaragoza.
Standard gauge access is scheduled to reach Port Tarragona in 2026 via the Mediterranean Corridor. With both Iberian and standard gauge connectivity, the port will function as a junction between the Henares, Ebro and Mediterranean corridors within the TEN-T network.
Rail transit time between Guadalajara–Marchamalo and Tarragona is estimated at six hours. The connecting route is used predominantly for freight traffic, limiting interaction with passenger services around Madrid.
