The project adds another location to the company’s terminal network and extends its presence in the Central European and Balkan freight corridors.

METRANS Group has started construction works on a new intermodal terminal in Szeged, southern Hungary.

The start of construction was accompanied by a formal event with participation from representatives of the Hungarian authorities, the City of Szeged and METRANS management. According to the information released by the company, the terminal is planned to enter operation in 2027.

The future facility is designed with four loading tracks, each 330 metres long. Handling operations are planned to be carried out using electric gantry cranes. Once operational, the terminal is expected to reach an annual handling capacity of up to 300,000 TEU.

Szeged’s location near the Hungarian - Serbian border positions the terminal as a connection point between Central Europe and the Balkan region. METRANS states that the site is intended to support rail-based freight transport and intermodal services along north–south corridors.

METRANS also indicates that the terminal should contribute to lower emissions from freight transport, support regional economic activity and improve freight flows across its network.
