The Randklev Bridge on the Dovre Line has officially reopened, reestablishing a crucial rail connection between Oslo and Trondheim.
The storm, which hit Norway in August 2023, caused unprecedented damage, including the collapse of the Randklev Bridge's central spans into the Gudbrandsdalslågen River. The bridge's foundations were undermined by the intense floodwaters, leading to significant disruption on the Dovre Line, a key corridor for both passenger and freight traffic.
In response, Bane NOR, the Norwegian rail infrastructure manager, initiated a comprehensive repair project. The damaged spans were removed and transported to dry land using a 1,350-tonne crane for repairs. Concurrently, new bridge piers were constructed to better withstand future extreme weather events. This ambitious project aimed to not only restore but also strengthen the bridge against similar incidents in the future.
The Dovre Line's closure had far-reaching impacts, forcing the diversion of trains onto the non-electrified Røros Line and significantly reducing rail freight capacity. With the reopening of the Randklev Bridge, normal operations on the Dovre Line have resumed, expected to alleviate the strain on alternative routes and restore efficiency in rail services across the region.
