CargoBeamer has introduced a new intermodal rail connection between Venlo in the Netherlands and Oradea in Romania.
Trains operate from Sunday to Friday out of the Cabooter Terminal in Venlo, and from Friday to Wednesday from the Intermodal Terminal in Oradea. The service handles craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers, containers, swap-bodies, refrigerated trailers, ADR shipments, and tank trailers.
This development represents one of the first direct rail connections for semi-trailers between the Netherlands and Romania. It is being run in cooperation with Romanian operator Routier European Transport, which is responsible for rail traction and will use most of the train capacity. Remaining slots are available to other market players.
The new link spans approximately 1,500 kilometres and targets cross-border freight flows between Western and Eastern Europe. CargoBeamer reports that the route could offer a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 88 percent compared to equivalent road transport, which translates to a saving of around 1,800 kilograms of CO₂ per transported semi-trailer.
