FS Logistix is equipping 60 of its locomotives with ERTMS onboard systems as part of a broader project within the FS Italiane Group.
Across the group, the ERTMS rollout covers 442 vehicles, with Trenitalia accounting for 382 units—comprising 272 regional, 74 Intercity/Eurocity, and 36 high-speed trains. FS Logistix adds the remaining 60 locomotives. The overall cost is reported at €70 million, drawing on EU support under both the 2014–2020 and 2021–2027 funding frameworks.
New locomotives recently delivered to Mercitalia Rail and TX Logistik are already equipped with the system, as are selected units from Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal. FS plans to complete installation across Trenitalia’s fleet by 2030, and FS Logistix by 2033.
ERTMS is mandated across the EU for future rail interoperability and is being gradually adopted across the network. The technology allows for a unified standard in train control and supports automated supervision of train operations across borders.
