Renfe Mercancías is finalizing the deployment of a new Terminal Operating System (TOS) at its intermodal terminals, aiming at the digitalization and optimization of logistics processes and operational workflows.
The initiative includes process automation and digital management of terminal activities such as gate control, train handling, freight management, and truck entries and exits. The TOS centralizes operational data, enabling improved tracking and more accurate inventory management. It also supports administrative tasks, including the systematic evaluation of provided services.
An essential part of this digital transition involves the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, specifically aimed at identification and traceability of rolling stock. IoT-based equipment installed on wagons and locomotives will provide real-time status and location updates. The integration of IoT into operational platforms is designed to optimize scheduling, fleet monitoring, and maintenance management, reducing the frequency and impact of breakdowns.
Funding for the digitalization project has been secured through subsidies totalling EUR 752,000 from the European Union's Next Generation funds, under Spain's Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. Specifically, EUR 240,000 supports terminal system improvements, and EUR 512,000 is allocated to the rolling stock IoT integration.
