This initiative is part of a broader push to explore sustainable alternatives for non-electrified rail lines, aiming to replace diesel-powered trains.

The Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture (TMIL), Erfurter Bahn, and Stadler have signed an agreement to begin testing the RS ZERO hydrogen train prototype in Thuringia.

The RS ZERO, first introduced at InnoTrans in Berlin, is designed to operate with zero local emissions, utilizing a hydrogen-based drive system. There is also the option of a battery-electric variant, providing additional flexibility for different route types. The prototype is seen as a potential solution for regions aiming to decrease greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining efficient regional rail transport.

The partnership between Stadler, Erfurter Bahn, and TMIL aligns with Thuringia's objectives to significantly cut emissions in passenger rail services by the middle of the next decade. The RS ZERO’s introduction to secondary routes could offer a way to reduce reliance on traditional diesel transport in areas that are not yet electrified.
