The 1,541-kilometer railway is expected to operate at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, reducing travel time between the two cities to approximately 5.5 hours.
Project overview
The railway will traverse 20 provinces and cities, including Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Nghe An, Hue, Da Nang, and Binh Thuan. The total project cost is estimated at around EUR 64 million. The route will feature 23 passenger stations and five freight terminals, supporting both passenger and cargo transport.
Timeline and construction phases
Construction is planned to begin in 2027, starting with two sections: Hanoi to Vinh in Nghe An Province and Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province to Ho Chi Minh City. Work on the remaining segment, connecting Vinh to Nha Trang, is scheduled for 2028-2029. The project aims for completion by 2035.
Strategic goals
The high-speed railway is intended to meet increasing transport demands and provide an alternative to existing modes along the North-South corridor. By integrating passenger and freight capabilities, the line is anticipated to serve logistical needs and contribute to connectivity within the country.
Vietnam's government has indicated that domestic funding will be prioritized for the project, with potential consideration of international loans under suitable conditions. The railway’s dual-purpose design will also serve national defence requirements.
