The railway line between the second-largest Slovakian town of Košice and Moldava nad Bodvou has been electrified and is now in operation.

The project, led by Slovak railway infrastructure manager ŽSR, involved infrastructure modifications, including the construction of overhead line equipment, modernization of signalling and communication systems, and upgrades to stations and stops.

The work was carried out from 2021 by the “ELHAMO” consortium, with ELTRA and TSS GRADE as the main contractors. The electrified section spans 21.5 km, enabling the operation of electric trains at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Several challenges arose during construction, including supply chain issues and the discovery of wartime ordnance in multiple locations, which impacted the project timeline.

The project was financed through European Union funds (85%) and the Slovak state budget (15%), with total costs amounting to €66.8 million.
