As of 7 July 2025, Van den Bosch has taken full ownership of the Spanish rail operator Multirail, acquiring the remaining shares from the Ayuso family.

The move follows Van den Bosch's earlier entry into the Spanish market in 2021 through the acquisition of TCS Trans, which included a 50% stake in Multirail.

Share transfer background

The Ayuso family, which had been a longstanding shareholder in Multirail, held onto their stake after Van den Bosch's partial acquisition in 2021. Their subsequent withdrawal from the transport sector, including the divestment of transport company Euconsa in 2024, paved the way for this full transfer of ownership.

Intermodal focus and corridors

Van den Bosch has outlined its intent to focus on the development of intermodal connections in Spain. Current efforts are concentrated on the Barcelona–Madrid and Madrid–Santander corridors. This includes investment in shared train services for multiple customers and ongoing collaboration with international rail and ferry operators to support connections across the European rail network.

Operational continuity and management

Operations under the Multirail name will continue from both Córdoba and Barcelona. The local teams remain in place, and Juan Ramirez will retain his managerial position. Ramirez has been closely associated with the company’s operations and development over the years.

Multirail continues to operate as part of Van den Bosch’s intermodal network in southern Europe. The company maintains its freight transport focus, operating in collaboration with multiple partners within the logistics chain.
