The project is aimed at increasing train-handling capacity and adapting the terminal infrastructure for future container crane operations.

Construction has begun on the multi-phase expansion of METRANS' intermodal terminal in Gądki, located near Poznań, Poland.

RMG crane integration and yard expansion

As part of the works, METRANS is preparing the terminal for the installation of remote-controlled rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes. The operational yard will be enlarged and reconfigured to support crane-based container handling. This involves a redesign of the cargo zone to transition from reach stackers to gantry crane operations over selected areas.

The upgrade is expected to impact the layout of the storage zone as well. The site is being prepared for efficient vertical stacking and automated handling, which could change the operational structure of the terminal.

750-metre track infrastructure

The reconstruction plan includes both extending current rail tracks and building new ones, allowing for the handling of full-length 750-metre freight trains. This aligns the facility with EU rail freight length standards.

Longer siding capacity is expected to support transit and block train flows between Poland and other METRANS-operated terminals in Central and Eastern Europe. The company currently operates an intermodal network connecting inland hubs in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, and Germany.

Truck gate and parking improvements

A new truck gate will be installed at Gądki, equipped with a modern access control system. A parking area for heavy trucks is also being added to manage vehicle flows at peak times and improve internal circulation.

The overall expansion project is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2026. During the phased works, the terminal will continue operating, with traffic coordination measures implemented to mitigate disruptions to ongoing intermodal services.
