Enfinium, a UK-based energy from waste operator, has successfully received its first waste delivery by rail at the Ferrybridge site in West Yorkshire.

This operation enables the Ferrybridge 1 and 2 facilities to source unrecyclable waste from a broader area, offering an alternative to road transport, thus reducing traffic and associated emissions.

The rail delivery trial, conducted over the weekend in collaboration with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK and Freightliner, saw approximately 700 tonnes of household waste transported to Ferrybridge. The site's pre-existing railhead infrastructure, a legacy from its days as a coal-fired power station, facilitated this operation.

Transporting waste by rail is seen as a significant environmental move. It offers an opportunity to decrease road traffic and emissions, with rail freight producing an average of 76% lower emissions per freight tonne-kilometre compared to road freight. This initial delivery alone removed around 40 waste trucks from the roads. Enfinium aims to achieve net zero emissions across its operations by 2033, as detailed in its Net Zero Transition Plan.

The successful trial opens up the possibility of connecting the Ferrybridge site to one of the UK’s emerging Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) clusters by rail. Enfinium's plans to deploy CCS technology across all its sites, supported by a £1.7 billion investment programme, could see the transport of captured CO2 by rail to coastal storage facilities. The use of rail for this purpose provides an alternative to pipeline connections and could accelerate the site's decarbonisation efforts.

Ferrybridge, the largest energy-from-waste plant in the UK, diverts up to 1.45 million tonnes of waste from landfill annually, generating 170 MW of energy—sufficient to power 340,000 homes per year. The site's ability to use rail freight for waste delivery aligns with Enfinium’s broader goals of environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

Enfinium operates four sites across the UK, with additional sites under construction. The company processes 2.3 million tonnes of unrecyclable waste annually, converting it into energy. Enfinium's strategic plans include the potential to contribute to local heat networks and produce electrolytic hydrogen, supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions by 2050.

SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, employing over 6,200 people and managing approximately 11 million tonnes of waste annually, provided essential support for this trial. Freightliner, the UK's largest maritime intermodal logistics operator, also played a crucial role, showcasing the viability and benefits of rail freight in waste management logistics.
