The La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), a key asset of the Contship Italia Group, is poised to begin construction on the first phase of its Molo Ravano extension, a project that promises to significantly enhance the terminal’s rail connectivity and handling capacity.
The official call for tenders for this project has been issued, with submissions due by September and winning contractor announced by the end of December 2024.
Project Scope and Rail Focus
The Molo Ravano extension project is designed in two main performance lots, with the initial phase concentrating on expanding rail infrastructure and terminal capacity. The primary goal is to increase LSCT’s annual handling capacity from 1.4 million TEUs to 2.0 million TEUs. Central to this expansion is the enhancement of rail facilities to accommodate a larger share of container traffic via rail transport.
LSCT aims to increase the proportion of cargo moved by rail to 50% of its total throughput. This shift aligns with the growing demand for faster, more sustainable transport options. Enhancing the terminal's rail capabilities is crucial for reducing dependency on road transport, thus lowering congestion and emissions in the region.
The extension of Molo Ravano includes significant upgrades to the terminal’s rail infrastructure. This will involve expanding rail yards, adding new tracks, and integrating advanced rail handling systems to support increased volumes and improve operational efficiency.
