Siemens Mobility has conducted the first automated train operation (ATO) on a mainline in the Nordic countries, completing ETCS Level 2-based test runs on the 19 km Juurikorpi–Hamina section in Finland. The demonstration combined Automatic Train Operation (GoA2) with the European Train Control System, using a modernised train owned by Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy (JKOY) and operated by VR-Yhtymä Oyj (VR).
Siemens integrated onboard ATO functions with ETCS Level 2 supervision to automate traction and braking while maintaining driver responsibility.
During the runs, the train performed automated stops from 100 km/h with an accuracy of 30–80 cm. The system managed acceleration, coasting and braking under continuous movement authority in mainline conditions.
ETCS provides continuous speed supervision and replaces national signalling systems with a harmonised European standard. ATO operates on top of ETCS, automating train handling to improve operational consistency and energy use in GoA2 mode.
In 2024, Siemens Mobility secured two contracts under Digirail. The company is equipping two trains with ETCS onboard units for testing and is modernising the first commercial section (EKA) of the Tampere–Pori/Rauma line using its Signaling X platform, based on commercial off-the-shelf hardware. The first segment is scheduled to enter operation in 2029.
Digirail, led by Finland’s Ministry of Transport and implemented by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, will replace legacy signalling systems with ETCS nationwide.
