Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter (VPS) has received a Prima H3 shunting locomotive converted from diesel to hydrogen operation.
The conversion is part of a retrofit project involving Alstom, VPS, WTZ Roßlau, TU Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films. Funding of €1.5 million has been provided by the city of Salzgitter through Lower Saxony’s structural support programme.
VPS, which operates 42 diesel shunting locomotives across Salzgitter AG’s industrial sites, will use the hydrogen unit in regular operations until the end of October 2025. The locomotive is expected to provide operational data on emissions and performance as part of the trial.
