Stadler has secured a contract to design, manufacture and deliver 35 diesel-electric mainline locomotives of the EURO4001 type to Turkish rail operator TCDD Taşımacılık. The agreement also covers spare parts, consumables, special tools, testing equipment and three years of maintenance and repair services.
The EURO4001 platform is designed for heavy freight operations on non-electrified routes and steep gradients. The locomotives meet Euro Stage V emissions standards, reducing particulate emissions by more than 90% and nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons by over 50% compared to older fleets, while ensuring interoperability through compliance with European TSI requirements. The locomotives are equipped with both ETCS Level 2 and the Turkish national ATS system.
The vehicles will be designed and manufactured at Stadler’s Valencia competence centre, with local implementation supported by Stadler Service Türkiye and partners including AYKAL Group and CERTIFER Türkiye to ensure smooth integration into service.
The order comes as Turkey continues to position itself as a major rail freight transit hub between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The Turkish government is investing heavily in rail infrastructure and fleet modernisation as part of efforts to shift traffic from road to rail and increase freight volumes. According to current plans, annual container volumes are expected to rise significantly by 2030, underlining the strategic importance of modern locomotive fleets for regional logistics corridors.
Stadler states that the EURO locomotive family has already achieved strong market penetration, with more than 400 units sold across Europe and beyond, including operations in Turkey over the past four years demonstrating high reliability and energy efficiency.
