Transnet has completed the assembly of the 200th Traxx 23E locomotive at its facility in South Africa, progressing toward the conclusion of its 240-unit procurement project.
The assembly milestone follows a settlement in 2023 with Alstom, which inherited the contract after acquiring Bombardier. Transnet Engineering has since ramped up production by introducing a 24/5 shift system and stabilising its supply chain. This contributed to a production peak of 43 locomotives in 2024.
The Traxx 23E fleet is designed to support freight operations across South Africa, with Transnet aiming to expand its role as an OEM for the region.
