Italian SITAV has presented a prototype hydrogen-powered locomotive at the fourth edition of Hydrogen Expo.
The hydrogen locomotive has reportedly passed initial approval phases. No technical specifications or performance metrics were disclosed. The project involved several industrial partners, including O.M.G. MANUFACTURING, BluEnergy Revolution Soc. Coop., and DAKO-CZ.
The project presentation took place during Hydrogen Expo 2025, an industry platform focused on hydrogen applications across sectors including energy, logistics, and transport.
Although the unit is described as a prototype, SITAV announced that it has already begun the certification process. The development of hydrogen-powered traction units is being pursued by multiple manufacturers as part of efforts to reduce reliance on diesel on non-electrified routes. No information was provided on fuel cell capacity, power output, range, or intended use case.
The involvement of DAKO-CZ suggests a possible supply of braking and safety components, while BluEnergy and OMG may have contributed to propulsion system integration or structural components.
