The wagon has been developed to address the specific demands of transporting bulk sleepers to trackbed locations on track construction and renewal sites.

GATX Rail Europe has introduced a new 4-axle flat wagon type under the designation Slnps, intended for the transport of railway sleepers to support infrastructure maintenance and construction work across European rail networks.

The Slnps is a flat wagon with foldable central stanchions, which enables full-length loading and unloading flexibility. It is equipped with a crane rail profile (type S33) and is suitable for various portal crane handling solutions due to its adjustable rail height (top of rail between 1,375 mm and 1,470 mm). This height range supports compatibility with existing loading systems used on maintenance and construction sites.

The wagon is constructed to carry up to 180 railway sleepers in three layers or 168 sleepers in four layers, depending on the required configuration. The ability to configure the load in layers is intended to support efficient material handling based on site-specific logistics. Front stanchions are fixed, while the four central stanchions are foldable, which allows for unobstructed access across the full wagon length during loading operations.

Technical Parameters

According to technical specifications provided by the manufacturer, the wagon has the following characteristics:

  • Tare weight: approx. 26.0 tonnes
  • Loading weight: approx. 64.0 tonnes
  • Total length over buffers: 20,640 mm
  • Loading capacity: Up to 180 sleepers (3-layer configuration) or 168 sleepers (4-layer configuration)
  • Stanchion setup: Fixed at both ends, four foldable in the center
  • Rail profile for crane handling: S33

The design follows standard flat wagon dimensions and payload requirements typically used in infrastructure logistics for ballast, sleeper, and rail transport.

Operational focus

The wagon type is intended for deployment in infrastructure renewal and new line construction projects across the EU and Nordic countries. Its modular configuration supports large-scale deliveries of prefabricated concrete sleepers to staging areas or directly to construction sites. The configuration is expected to align with operational needs of both infrastructure managers and contractors, especially on routes or corridors undergoing upgrades or construction.

The Slnps wagon is now available for leasing, as part of the manufacturer’s freight wagon portfolio aimed at the infrastructure segment.
