Mercitalia Intermodal has signed an agreement with the Austrian technology company PJM. The project will equip approximately 600 intermodal wagons with digital train functionalities. The project is scheduled to be implemented between 2025 and 2027. PJM's WaggonTracker system will be integrated as part of routine maintenance.
The WaggonTracker system provides real-time monitoring of key train components. These include speed, direction, geofencing and wheelset performance. Operational safety will also be enhanced by advanced features such as brake and kingpin monitoring and an Intelligent Derailment Detection System (IDDS). A local radio system will ensure secure communication between the wagons and the locomotive in real time. The system is also fully compatible with the future technology of Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC).
With the digitalization of its fleet, Mercitalia Intermodal aims to improve the efficiency of train preparation, optimize maintenance through predictive strategies and increase reliability while reducing unexpected repair cost
