The Class 93 locomotive, developed by Stadler and tested by the Rail Operations Group (ROG), made a public appearance at the Rail Live event in the UK. Initial testing began in Stadler’s Valencia facility in April 2023, with the locomotive completing its first solo run on the UK mainline in late May 2024. This locomotive stands out with its tri-mode capability, able to operate on a 25kV AC overhead system with a power rating of 5,360hp. Additionally, it is equipped with a 12-cylinder Caterpillar C32 diesel engine producing 1,205hp, supplemented by two lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) batteries.

Currently, units 93002 through 93010 remain in Spain, awaiting shipment to the UK in September. These units will undergo further data and software updates before full-scale driver training begins. ROG holds an option 20 more Class 93 locomotives and expects the first units available for service in 2025.

Class 99: Heavy Haul Capabilities

GB Railfreight (GBRf) is preparing to introduce the Class 99 locomotive, the UK’s first bi-mode heavy haul locomotive. The initial unit, 99001, is nearing readiness for its inaugural test run, which will be followed by extensive testing ahead of its UK service debut next year.

The Class 99 is able to operate on overhead electricity or alternative fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Its modular design positions it to integrate future technologies like batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. It has an electric power rating of 8,200hp and a Cummins QSK50 V16 diesel engine delivering 2,415hp.
