SEPTA has purchased 24 Bombardier-built coach cars from Montreal-area operator Exo for to support its Regional Rail fleet in Philadelphia.
SEPTA will carry out modifications to doors and onboard systems to align the vehicles with its operational standards before entering service. A deployment timeline is expected to be defined later in spring 2026.
SEPTA pursued the purchase following Federal Railroad Administration-mandated inspections and repairs of its Silverliner IV EMU fleet, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of Regional Rail rolling stock. The temporary withdrawal of a significant portion of these 50-year-old multiple units led to service reductions and capacity constraints across the network.
To mitigate further disruptions while planning long-term fleet replacement, SEPTA has explored short-term rolling stock options across North America. Earlier in 2026, the authority introduced 10 leased coach cars from Maryland’s MARC commuter rail system into revenue service.
The newly acquired vehicles will be transported from Montreal to Philadelphia, with commissioning dependent on the completion of required technical modifications and regulatory approvals.
