Amtrak will introduce its new NextGen Acela high-speed trains on August 28, operating on the Northeast Corridor between Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C.
The new trains will increase capacity by 27% per departure and are scheduled to operate alongside the current Acela fleet during the transition period. The launch will also bring expanded weekday and weekend timetables.
Onboard features include 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and reading lights. Tickets will be available through Amtrak’s mobile app, website, and station kiosks, with seat selection and itinerary management integrated into the booking process.
The NextGen Acela trainsets were assembled by Alstom in Hornell, New York, using components sourced from more than 180 suppliers across 29 U.S. states. Amtrak states that the project supported about 15,000 jobs nationwide.
The new fleet forms part of Amtrak’s broader modernisation programme, which also includes the introduction of Amtrak Airo trains, upgraded long-distance locomotives, and refurbished interiors for existing rolling stock.
