The route is intended to handle export cargo moving from Türkiye towards Europe as well as import flows arriving from Europe to the Halkalı terminal in Istanbul.

Körfez Ulaştırma has started intermodal freight operations on the Halkalı–Kapıkule rail corridor, linking Türkiye with the European rail network.

The company, operating as Türkiye’s first private rail freight train operator, plans to use the corridor to transport export goods to the border crossing at Kapıkule, while inbound traffic from Europe will be carried to Halkalı for onward distribution.

To support the new services, Körfez Ulaştırma has expanded its locomotive fleet with two Stadler Eurodual hybrid locomotives added during 2024. These locomotives combine electric and diesel traction, allowing operation on both electrified and non-electrified sections of the route without changing traction.

According to the operator, the Halkalı–Kapıkule line is positioned as an option for international rail freight between Türkiye and Europe, addressing cross-border logistics requirements with an intermodal focus. The services are aimed at integrating Turkish rail freight flows more closely with European corridors while using modern rolling stock adapted to mixed infrastructure conditions.
