The 530-kilometre route will be operated using Class 88 electro-diesel locomotives, capable of running under electric power where available.

Direct Rail Services (DRS) has introduced a new cross-country rail freight connection running between Daventry (England) and Coatbridge (Scotland).

Launched as a trial service, the route becomes DRS’s fourth Anglo-Scottish connection and is intended to provide additional capacity for intermodal traffic along one of the UK’s key logistics corridors.

The train is designed as a multi-customer service, enabling businesses with smaller freight volumes to utilise rail without the need to fill a full train. According to the operator, each train has the potential to remove around 30 heavy goods vehicles from the road.

By running primarily on electricity, the service aims to lower emissions in comparison with diesel-based alternatives.
