This makes Mülheim the fourth VPS railway location, alongside Salzgitter, Peine, and Ilsenburg.

Since the beginning of the year, Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter GmbH (VPS), a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, has been operating the industrial railway at the Mülheim an der Ruhr site independently.

The takeover involves 42 kilometers of internal railway infrastructure connecting various companies within the Salzgitter Group. These include EUROPIPE, MÜLHEIM PIPECOATINGS, and Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech. The network is primarily used for in-plant freight transport. According to the company, approximately 99% of Europipe’s goods are moved by rail on this internal system.

The site was previously operated by an external service provider. With the transfer of operational control, VPS now manages all railway-related activities directly, including dispatching and infrastructure maintenance. The line remains dedicated to internal logistics but is now integrated into the group’s own management structure.

Connection to the public rail network via Mülheim-Styrum station continues unchanged. This node handles incoming and outgoing freight beyond the factory gates. The inclusion of Mülheim into the VPS system is part of a broader logistics framework that also covers port operations in Salzgitter, warehousing, and transshipment services.

VPS reports handling more than 43 million tonnes of freight annually across the group’s logistics network. The Mülheim site expands the operational footprint of the company within Salzgitter’s internal supply and distribution structure.

Transportation on other sites:

Salzgitter mainly transports ore, coal, coke, lime, sinter, pig iron, slag, crude steel as well as semi-finished and finished steel products.

Peine focuses on the supply of scrap to the electric steelworks, as well as the transport of raw materials and finished steel products.

Ilsenburg internal logistics aims at feeding the raw material into the heavy plate rolling mill and transporting the finished products away.
