It is not over yet for the coal transports by rail, at least not in Kazakhstan, where KTZ braces itself – because the winter is coming.

As Kazakhstan approaches the 2024-2025 heating season, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) has already transported 17 million tons of coal across the country since May. Of this total, 16 million tons were delivered to thermal power plants, with the remaining 1 million tons allocated for residential heating needs.

KTZ has introduced a roadmap for coal transportation to ensure the steady supply of solid fuel during the colder months. This plan includes the establishment of an operational headquarters that coordinates coal logistics, involving over 60 employees from KTZ’s central and regional offices. The headquarters is responsible for the continuous monitoring of coal shipments from key mines to various regions and power plants across Kazakhstan. This system allows KTZ to make real-time decisions and plan for both short- and medium-term coal deliveries, ensuring a reliable flow of empty wagons for loading.

In preparation for the winter months, KTZ has engaged with major coal suppliers, including JSC Karazhyra, JSC Maikuben West, JSC Shubarkol Komir, and Kazakhmys. These discussions focused on maintaining a consistent coal transportation schedule and refining the logistics necessary for smooth operations. During the upcoming heating season, approximately 20,000 gondola cars from JSC Kaztemirtrans will be dedicated to coal transport.

To improve the efficiency of these operations, KTZ has implemented an interactive system to monitor coal transportation in real-time. This system tracks coal supplies, the stock levels at thermal power plant warehouses, and the overall turnaround of wagons, ensuring that the demands of shippers are met effectively.
