ERS Summit 2025: DAC and Beyond in Rail

The European Rolling Stock Summit (ERS Summit) 2025 was held on March 18-19 in Warsaw, Poland.

This summit was a pivotal gathering for key decision-makers from across the sector, including Wagon Keepers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECMs), and leading suppliers.

These are the four key issues that were discussed at the Summit:

Day 1

The first day was an exploration of transformative technologies and regulatory frameworks.

Niklas Weidert, Sales and Marketing Director at Voith, delivered the opening presentation titled "The DAC as an Enabler for Future Train Functions." He emphasized the transformative potential of the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) in revolutionizing freight operations by enhancing efficiency and interoperability.

Following this, a panel discussion moderated by Giorgio Travaini, Executive Director at Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking, delved into the "Challenges and Opportunities with DAC Adoption." Panelists, including Petr Jindra from ČD Cargo, Jonas Eriksson from Lindholmen Science Park, and Marten Strotkoetter from SBB Cargo, shared insights on implementing DAC across European rail networks.

Silvia De Rocchi, Director Coordinator at Rail Freight Forward, presented "Future Regulatory Roadmap for Rolling Stock: Preparing for Tomorrow’s Standards," providing an overview of upcoming regulations and their implications for the industry.

 The afternoon sessions included a presentation by Francis Vander Ghinst, Head of Sales at Railnova, on "Advancing Rail Digitization by Unlocking IoT Rolling Stock Data," highlighting the role of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in enhancing rail operations. Maria Antonietta Zocco, Technical Director at Mercitalia Logistics, discussed "Harnessing Digital Technologies for Predictive Maintenance in Wagon Fleets," emphasizing the importance of predictive maintenance strategies. ​

Akos Ersek, Chief Policy Advisor at UIRR, addressed "Intermodal Rail Freight: Policy, Own-initiative Progress, and the Road Ahead," focusing on policies promoting intermodal transport. Daniel Rost from Wascosa spoke on "Integration of Digital Technologies in Rolling Stock," and Miloslav Červený from LTE-group Holding discussed "Strategies for Resilient Railway Operations in Conflict Zones," sharing strategies for maintaining operations in challenging environments.

Day 2

The second day was opened with Agnieszka Lewocka, Legal Counsel at SWP, presenting "Rail Fleet Safety & Liability: Legal Risks for Lessors & Operators," addressing legal considerations in rail fleet management. ​

Jochen Fehrenbach, Key Account Manager at Rolls Royce, discussed "Defossilation in Non-Catenary Rail Traction," exploring alternatives to traditional fossil fuels in rail transport. ​

Karina Jezierska, Sales Director at Greenbrier, presented "Let it Rail! - Innovations as the Future of the Railway Industry," showcasing cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of railways. František Domanicky and Branislav Toporcer from Tatravagonka discussed "Innovation in Intermodal Transport," highlighting advancements in intermodal solutions. ​

In the afternoon, Lubomir Dlabik, Sales Account Manager at European Loc Pool, spoke on "Future Innovations in Freight Wagon and Locomotive Design," discussing upcoming design innovations aimed at enhancing performance and sustainability. Robert Groiss, Business Development Manager at Metrans Group, presented "The Power of Networks," emphasizing the importance of collaborative networks in the rail industry. ​

Philipp Aubert, General Manager at Cargobeamer Rolling Stock, concluded the sessions with "Increased Asset Utilization through Automatic Train Control and Trailer Measurement," focusing on technologies to optimize asset utilization.

Overall, the ERS Summit 2025 served as an important platform for industry stakeholders to share opportunities that will shape the future of the rolling stock industry.
