Siemens Mobility has been awarded a major contract to modernize São Paulo’s commuter network with the most extensive ATO over ETCS Level 2 system ever implemented in Latin America.

The project, commissioned by Trivia Trens S.A., will deliver a comprehensive digital signaling solution covering 140 kilometers of track and 46 stations across lines 11-Coral, 12-Sapphire, and 13-Jade. This makes it the largest ETCS Level 2 deployment on the continent.

Under the contract, Siemens Mobility will equip over 130 vehicles — including 107 trains, six MRS locomotives, three TRIVIA locomotives, and 17 auxiliary vehicles — with Trainguard ETCS on-board units. The company will also handle the design, supply, installation, commissioning, and assisted operation of the full signaling system.

"This landmark project demonstrates our commitment to bringing cutting-edge rail technology to Latin America," said Marc Ludwig, CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility. "By implementing ATO over ETCS Level 2 in São Paulo’s busy metropolitan network, we’re setting new standards for automation and efficiency — increasing network capacity by up to 30%."

The scope includes an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATS), modern interlockings, Radio Block Centres (RBC), and complete trackside equipment, supported by a two-year warranty and spare parts package.

ATO over ETCS integrates automatic train operation with continuous digital train control, enabling smoother driving profiles, precise platform stops, and reduced headways. The technology also enhances energy efficiency, cutting peak power use and minimizing maintenance through fewer trackside components.

The modernization is expected to transform São Paulo’s rail services, boosting reliability, service frequency, and long-term sustainability. Siemens Mobility says the project marks a 'future-proof investment' for one of Latin America’s most vital urban transport networks.
