ADY outlined its goal of achieving a carbon-neutral rail network by 2030 and formalized a new partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the decarbonization effort.

At the 'Sustainable Transport for the Future' event, Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) presented its latest 'Sustainability Report' and discussed plans to modernize its railway operations through decarbonization. The event highlighted ADY's ambitions to reduce emissions and energy consumption in line with Azerbaijan's national climate change targets and international sustainability standards and focused on green innovations in transport.

Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Emil Mammadov highlighted the importance of international cooperation in digital innovation and Azerbaijan's strategic vision for the development of sustainable transport. COP29 Director General Elnur Sultanov and Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on Natural Resources, Energy and Ecology Sadig Gurbanov discussed the importance of transport in achieving global climate goals and Azerbaijan's role in green innovation.

ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov outlined the organization's commitment to emissions reduction and energy efficiency, positioning the railways as a key player in sustainable transport. He highlighted that rail transport in Azerbaijan accounts for only 1.12% of the country's energy consumption. Its greenhouse gas emissions are less than 0.5%. Rustamov also noted that by 2023, 100% of passenger and 80% of freight transport will be powered by electricity, underlining the industry's shift towards greener operations.

The launch of the report and the partnership with the ADB mark significant steps in Azerbaijan's broader goals to create a carbon-neutral rail network by 2030, reflecting a commitment to sustainable infrastructure development.
