Softronic has delivered the seventh and eighth electric locomotives as part of a contract funded through Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
The contract focuses on upgrading electric locomotives for passenger operations on domestic routes. Each unit undergoes a complete overhaul at Softronic’s facility in Craiova, including the installation of new traction systems, onboard diagnostics, and components designed to align with European interoperability standards. The refurbished locomotives also feature improved working conditions for drivers, with redesigned cabs and upgraded control interfaces.
As part of a branding approach tied to cultural themes, the two latest locomotives carry liveries depicting Ana Aslan and Iulia Hașdeu. Aslan was a medical researcher known for her work in gerontology, while Hașdeu was a poet and polyglot who became a notable figure in Romanian cultural history despite her early death.
The modernization program, backed by EU funds through the PNRR, is part of a wider initiative to improve the efficiency and sustainability of Romania’s rail transport system.
