ÖBB presents Railjet double-decker for long-distance services

The double-decker vehicles are intended for long-distance transport and are scheduled to begin operation on the western route (Westbahn line) from the end of 2026.

ÖBB has officially presented its first new Railjet double-decker train in Vienna. It is a part of fourteen Railjet double-decker trains that have been ordered under the existing framework agreement with Stadler. According to ÖBB, the trains will initially serve the western corridor and are also planned for use on the southern corridor following the completion of the Semmering Base Tunnel.

Each trainset consists of six cars with a total length of approximately 160 metres and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. The maximum capacity is 486 seats across both first and second class.

Interior and equipment  

The Railjet double-decker is equipped with low-floor entry for faster boarding and disembarkation. The interior includes dedicated areas for catering with vending machines, real-time passenger information systems, digital seat reservation displays, and onboard Wi-Fi under the Railnet portal.

Additional features include:

  • Two wheelchair spaces in the middle car with adjustable tables
  • Ten bicycle parking spaces
  • Eight toilets, including one barrier-free toilet
  • Luggage racks with NFC security functionality
  • Video surveillance system

The design of the boarding areas is intended to offer access for passengers with reduced mobility, heavy luggage, bicycles, and strollers.

Investment plan  

ÖBB plans to invest approximately EUR 6.1 billion in its fleet by 2030. Additionally, the Austrian rail infrastructure is part of a broader investment programme totalling around EUR 19.7 billion by 2030.
