Austria rail freight volumes rose 1.8% in 2025

Rail freight traffic on Austria’s network reached 96.2 million tonnes in 2025, up 1.8% year on year, according to Statistics Austria. Domestic transport performance increased by 2.6% to 21.5 billion tonne-kilometres.

Total volumes rose by 1.7 million tonnes compared with 2024. Domestic traffic grew 3.5% to 28.5 million tonnes, while transit increased 2.7% to 30.0 million tonnes. Cross-border inbound traffic was broadly stable at 21.0 million tonnes (+0.1%) and outbound traffic edged down 0.2% to 16.7 million tonnes.

Transit accounted for 31.2% of total tonnage, with flows between Germany and Italy via Austria representing 13.1 million tonnes, or 43.8% of transit volumes. Germany remained Austria’s largest rail freight partner country for both inbound (30.9%) and outbound (43.8%) traffic.

In tonne-kilometre terms, transit generated 8.4 billion tkm, up 6.7%, while domestic transport performance rose 5.0% to 4.5 billion tkm. Cross-border outbound performance fell 3.1% to 3.7 billion tkm and inbound declined 1.7% to 5.0 billion tkm.

Long-distance flows continued to dominate. Services over 300 km accounted for 57.8% of total transport performance, equivalent to 12.4 billion tkm. Intermodal traffic also increased, with 2.1 million road vehicles, semi-trailers, containers and swap bodies carried, up 2.9% year on year, corresponding to 3.2 million TEU (+4.6%).
