Hub for European freight transport
Built between 2013 and 2016, the freight centre is located in the south of Vienna, at the intersection of the Pottendorf line and the S1 Vienna Outer Ring Expressway. Its optimal location makes switching from road to rail particularly attractive in the eastern region, as it is located on the S1 expressway and the southern railway line, as well as three trans-European rail axes. This provides easy access to important European economic centres.
Additional tracks and switch connections for simplified processes and increased capacity
Due to rising demand and high utilisation, ÖBB has announced that construction work on the final expansion stage, 'Phase 2', will begin in early September 2025. This will increase the terminal's capacity from 380,000 to 547,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) by the end of 2026 — a 44% increase.
Additional tracks and switch connections will simplify freight handling and create more capacity. Customers will then have a total of eight 700-metre loading tracks at their disposal. A subsequent automated gantry crane system will further improve performance. The two existing gantry cranes will also be retrofitted to enable automated operation in the future.
TSA terminals
The Vienna South terminal is one of seven freight terminals operated by Terminal Service Austria (TSA) on behalf of ÖBB-Infrastruktur in Austria. The core business at Vienna South involves the transhipment of containers, swap bodies, and semi-trailers in unaccompanied combined transport.
