As part of the contract, Budimex was responsible for the comprehensive reconstruction of the Gdynia Port railway station together with the pre-port areas and associated infrastructure, as well as the improvement of the associated railway lines. Thanks to these modernisations, the port will soon be able to be reached by longer, as much as 750-metre-long trains transporting goods, which will significantly increase the capacity and efficiency of the logistics service.
The activities included comprehensive reconstruction of the Port of Gdynia railway station, including the pre-port areas and the associated infrastructure. The modernisation work, which involved nearly 600 people and 200 equipment units on a daily basis, included the upgrading of 115 km of track, the installation of 359 switches and the electrification of port accesses.
"We are now at the final acceptance stage, with all essential work completed. A beautiful layout of as many as 39 tracks has been created. This is undoubtedly the largest railway infrastructure contact ever carried out by Budimex," says Piotr Czupryn, Budimex SA Contact Director.
Thanks to the completion of the construction, the number of trains serviced has increased, while at the same time the duration of cargo handling has been shortened. The investment has significantly improved transport possibilities in this part of Poland, which will soon translate not only into the development of the city and the region, but also of the entire national transport. In addition, 13 km of roads, a railway bridge and 25 level crossings were rebuilt. Two new railway viaducts, a Local Control Centre building, two railway signal boxes and a new PKP Cargo office building were also built.
"The completion of work on the Gdynia contract is not only proof of our determination and competence, but also a significant contribution to the development of the railway infrastructure in Poland. By modernising the railway junction, we have increased the capacity of trains by almost five times. This opens up new opportunities for investors and transport companies. Thanks to this investment, we are also strengthening strategic transport connections, which will contribute to increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of Polish ports in the international arena," says Dariusz Taraszkiewicz, Director of Area 1 of Railway Construction of Budimex SA.
The realisation of works on the construction of railway infrastructure in the Port of Gdynia is not the only investment of Budimex in this area. As the consortium leader, it will build protective breakwaters for the Outer Port. Almost 2.5 km of breakwaters are to be built under the contract. Its implementation has been supported by a grant from the State Treasury. The investment will be carried out in the design and build mode. Design works together with obtaining a building permit are to take up to 490 days from the signing of the contract, and construction works together with obtaining an occupancy permit are to take up to 819 days from obtaining a building permit. The creation of the Outer Harbour is expected to allow the handling of larger seagoing vessels and more ships.
