FS turns a terminal near Rome into an international cargo hub

The Pomezia Santa Palomba terminal, just southwest of Rome, will be developed by FS Group into a modern international cargo hub.

The central Italian railway terminal in Pomezia Santa Paloma, will get a significant upgrade to become one of the key hubs on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor in Italy. It currently has 13 tracks with 618 m of length, which FS Group plans to prolong for trains of up to 740 m.

Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato (FS Group) runs the terminal via Polo Logistica and Mercitalia Shunting. Upgrade of the terminal is within the 300 million euro plan of FS Group to modernise existing and build new intermodal hubs to double the volume of goods transported by rail by 2030.

Carlo Palasciano, President of Mercitalia Logistics, said: “Central Italy and the metropolitan area of ​​Rome need a modern, functional, connected, performing, international intermodal hub.” 

With Pomezia Santa Paloma as a mobility hub, the Lazio region will get a better connection between industrial production areas in the north and the consumer markets in the south and the islands. At the same time, it will open up possibilities for the companies in the Lazio region to better access markets in the middle of Europe.
