ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has launched a new rail logistics project with binderholz, transporting prefabricated timber wall and ceiling elements for residential construction from Austria to the Netherlands.

Following trial shipments carried out in 2025, the project moves into its next phase from 2026, with volumes of 150–200 wagons per year planned. According to RCG, this corresponds to a reduction of up to 500 truck journeys annually.

The transport chain starts at binderholz’s production site in Hallein, Austria, with wagons moved via single wagonload traffic to Linz. From there, the consignments are integrated into RCG’s TransFER Linz–Antwerp service and moved to Belgium, before continuing to Moerdijk in the Netherlands. Rail traction on the route is provided entirely by RCG, with the final deliveries from Moerdijk to construction sites carried out by the customer using electric trucks.

Special 20-foot aluminium transport frames are used for the shipments. These customer-owned racks allow prefabricated elements to be lifted onto wagons in a single handling operation, reducing loading time and simplifying terminal processes compared with conventional securing methods.

Binderholz is an international timber producer with more than 60 sites across Europe and the United States. Its product range includes sawn timber, engineered wood products such as glulam and cross-laminated timber, and prefabricated timber construction elements used in residential and commercial buildings.
